Our Commitment to the Environment

November 26, 2022 By Morgan

We take our commitment to the environment very seriously at the Clay Coyote, and we’re always looking for ways to improve and be more environmentally thoughtful.

When you order from us we use environmentally friendly packing materials whenever possible. For example, 95% of our peanuts are biodegradable, decompose in water leaving no toxic waste, and are FDA compliant. We specifically purchase them for that reason. The other 5% are reused from other shipments we receive, our own version of recycling through multi-use.

We’ve tried a paper cushion, to replace peanuts, but we found that the paper cushion offers less shock absorption and significantly more breakage, resulting in a greater carbon footprint – remaking, repackaging, and redelivering. For example, the year before switching to the biodegradable peanuts, we had 35 UPS claims for broken products, the next year we had 1.

And, all of the paper used in our packing is recycled from our local newspaper company.

Finally, over the last several years we have doubled down on our commitment to the environment and instituted many new green initiatives at our small company.

  • We reduced our energy usage by 94% shifting from halogen to LED lighting.
  • We also began using load management with our local power company so that we’re not using electricity in high-volume times.

We take our responsibility to protect the environment very seriously and we’ll be sure to update you when we make changes to strengthen that commitment. Make sure to keep an eye on our blog here and follow us on Instagram here to stay up to date!

I hope that you’ll consider supporting our small business in the future.

Recipe Revisited: Cranberry-Apple Crisp

August 27, 2022 By Morgan

From Emily in the Gallery~

Today is my last day working Clay Coyote Gallery (sad face) but will be back throughout the holiday season to help out! That being said, I only find it fitting to revisit this very first Clay Coyote recipe posted back in 2006! I LOVE everything apple, and so I know personally I will be making this recipe as we return to school and as apple picking season commences.

Morgan’s Cranberry-Apple Crisp

  1. First, put 1 cup of fresh cranberries, one cup of water and ¼ cup of sugar in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.
  2. While the cranberries are coming to a boil, peal and chop up 4-5 apples. I prefer Honeycrisp (they are Minnesotan) but any apple you like is fine.
  3. The put the apples in a big baking bowl (preferably a Clay Coyote Bowl Shallow –  (they are oven safe you know) and sprinkle with ¼ cup sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and a squirt of lime juice if you have it.
  4. When the berries have boiled (they will look a bit like mush – that’s ok) drain off the juice and pour the berries in with the apple mixture. Fold the apples and the berries together.
  5. Then in a separate bowl combine together 1 ½ cup rolled oats, 2 table spoons flour, 1 table spoon cinnamon, ¼ cup sugar, and 3/4 stick of room temperature butter. Pour the mixture over the fruit and place in the oven at 350 for 50-60 minutes.
  6. When you are all done, it should look like this:

Optional Pottery Used

  • Clay Coyote Salad Bowl Deep
  • Soup & Chili Bowls

Wine Time at Clay Coyote

July 2, 2021 By Betsy Price

Here at Clay Coyote, we love a nice glass of wine shared with friends and family. And naturally, we love that wine to be consumed from a handmade ceramic cup. Every week, our potters are churning out one-of-a-kind wine cups that go out the door almost as fast as they come in. Add on a handmade wine chiller and a short cup for the bottom of your bottle to catch the drips and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a lovely evening. Just this week, we got in wine tags from our friends over at Spooner Creek in Wisconsin. These add humor to any bottle, and also make a great gift! So grab you’re favorite bottle of wine, some handmade cups, and enjoy the slow summer evenings with those you love most.

Artist Profiles: Karg Art Glass

February 6, 2019 By Eric Lofdahl

Karg Art Glass Sculpture Against the SnowWe’ve gotten a good bit of snow out here at the Clay Coyote in the past few weeks. That’s meant plenty of plowing for Morgan, and lots of shoveling and sweeping for me. It has also brought out the beauty of our window displays. We have some amazing glass art in front of the windows here, and the pristine white backgrounds make the colors of these pieces pop. I have been drawn to the display on the East wall of the gallery in particular, where we have pieces from Karg Art Glass. This is the art of Rollin Karg, an artist who discovered his talents later in life than most.

Karg Art Glass PaperweightGrowing up, Rollin Karg was surrounded by men who worked with their hands. He describes his father and grandfather as “big strong hard-working guys.” Naturally, he wanted to grow up to be like them, working as a carpenter or contractor. They had a different vision for him, and told him that he would be the president of a company one day. So, he went on to study business at Wichita State and began a career in industry and sales afterwards.

As a result, his career in glass blowing did not start until age 38. On a family vacation, he had stopped at the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York and saw a glass blowing demonstration. That was all it took to get him hooked. He began taking classes with Richard Stauffer at Emporia State University and in 1983 he began his career as a full time artist.

He started by making paperweights in his garage, and selling his work from the basement. Before long, the 340-square-foot workspace was not enough, and he moved into a 3,000-square-foot space. And 450-square-feet of that was dedicated to gallery space. Six months later, he had to move again.

Karg Art Glass Paperweight

Karg is now operating out of a facility in Kechi, Kansas that consists of two buildings. The largest is 7,300-square-feet and holds a 3,200-square-foot gallery. As his workspace grew and evolved, so too did his art. From the paperweights he started with, Karg began making larger sculptures from glass. These elongated pieces twist and stretch upward, and actually came about from a mistake he made while creating a paperweight.

Karg Art Glass Metal and Glass SculptureThe second building at his facility is 3,000-square-feet and started as a space to make metal stands to display his glass art as well as the furnaces he uses to create it. Karg, a man who clearly can suddenly be struck by inspiration and is not afraid of taking risks, began to experiment with metal and incorporate it into his art. He now makes sculptures that are a combination of metal and glass, and come in sizes both large and small.

Karg’s glass art can be found at galleries in nearly every state, as well as in Montreal and Toronto, and his metal sculptures are featured in sculpture walks. The Clay Coyote is the one gallery in Minnesota where you can find his work.

Come in and see his stunning pieces against the snow here at the gallery, or, if you don’t want to brave the cold, you can buy his art on our online shop as well.
