Mother’s Day

May 1, 2019 By Eric Lofdahl

Mother’s Day is next Sunday. You probably have an idea of what you want to get for your mom or have bought it already, but maybe you are still looking for a unique gift to impress her this year. We’ve got that covered here at the Clay Coyote. Our wide variety of handmade art, both from our own potters and the featured artists we carry in the gallery, has something for everyone.

Chef's Line of FlamewareIf your mother is a home chef, consider picking up a piece from our Chef’s Line of flameware pottery. Full of unique, versatile pieces there is sure to be an item that will fill a gap in your mom’s kitchen or upgrade a piece of cookware she already has. Each piece of flameware can be used on the stove, whether it’s an electric, gas, or glass top stove, as well as in the oven or on the grill. My personal favorites are the Clay Coyote Flameware Cazuela, the Clay Coyote Dutch Oven, and the Clay Coyote Tagine. The Cazuela features deep sides, a short handle, and a tab on the front to make it easy to move the pan between stovetop and oven. It will become the workhorse of your mom’s kitchen in no time. The Dutch Oven holds about three quarts, and is made entirely of Clay Coyote Flameware. Our Tagine, on the other hand, features a flameware bottom and a stoneware top that is available in four colors. The Tagine is a true statement piece. We have cookbooks that pair great with both the Dutch Oven and Tagine and will give your mom some inspiration for delicious new recipes.

Maybe your mom is more of a baker than a chef. Lucky for you, we have great baking dish options here as well. The Clay Coyote Bread Baker and the Clay Coyote Baking Dish are a covered and open baking dish option from our potters. We also have numerous baking dishes from our featured artists such as the Campbell Pottery Pie Plate and the Sunset Canyon Pottery Lasagna Baking Dish.

Jewelry always makes a great gift, and we have plenty of that in the gallery as well. Some new jewelry has come in over the past few weeks, so if your mom is a fan of Clay Coyote but hasn’t been out to the gallery recently, you can surprise her with something she hasn’t seen before. Spirit Glassworks and joeyfivecents are a couple of the exciting new artists we have in the gallery. Or maybe you know she has had her eye on a specific piece from an artist we have featured for a while such as Desert Heart Jewelry or Ten2Midnight Studios.

Whatever you decide on it is sure to a be a quality piece of handcrafted art. I could go on for pages highlighting the unique pieces we carry in the gallery. Instead, I’ll encourage you to come out to the gallery to see the pieces in person. I have already picked out something for my mother, but I can’t tell you what it is because she reads this blog. I gift wrapped it here, and I’ll be happy to do the same for the gift you pick out.

Not in Minnesota? If you order from our online shop, you can leave a note for us to gift wrap and include a personal message with your gift. Happy shopping!

Things to do this weekend (April 27, 28 & 29, 2018)

April 25, 2018 By Morgan

It’s hump day and you know what that means … I’m thinking about what I want to do this weekend  (April 27, 28 & 29, 2018). There are so many fun art activities on the horizon, it’s a good thing my lawn’s still frozen. No guilt.

First up, right here in Hutchinson, there’s a new event called Minted Patina Market, a thrifty show featuring upcyclers, local creators, and some fun food and beverage options. It’s going to be at the McLeod County Fairgrounds on Friday, April 27th from 10am to 6pm and Saturday, April 27th from 9am to 3pm. It’s free to get in, unless you want to go early before the crowds which you can do for $15; parking is also free.

If you’re coming to Hutchinson for this fun event, stop by the Clay Coyote on your way to or fro… we’re located just 4 ½ miles north of Hutch on Highway 15 (only a 15 minute drive from the Fairgrounds).

The Gallery is full of new pottery, handcrafted jewelry, blown glass, metal sculptures, woven fiber, carved wood, and more. We have the perfect shower and wedding gifts. Remember, mom loves pottery (flowers wilt).

While you’re out and about check out Prairie Haven’s occasional sale (also just north of Hutchinson). Jane and her crew have some beautiful home furnishings. I’ve got a few pf her gorgeous end tables, pillows, rocking chairs, and benches in my home. And her husband makes wine barrel art including lamps, tables, and wall hangings.

Also, this weekend is the St. Paul Art Crawl. Many of our favorite Twin Cities Artists will have their wears on display at galleries around town. Some of the past MN Pottery Festival potters will be hosting open houses … stop by Caufield Clayworks or Front Ave Pottery & Tile to name a few.

We’re going to try to get to all of these events. And we’re planning dinner at Alma Cafe (recently rated as one of the 50 best new restaurants in the USA by Bon Appétit).

Whew, that’s a pretty fun weekend!

Mother’s Day? I’m thinking Ira Burhans’ Stoneware

April 27, 2017 By Morgan

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, and its time to start brainstorming the perfect item for your wonderful mother. My go-to is always the handmade object, specifically pottery! Lately, Ira Burhans’ stoneware pottery has been catching my eye in the Gallery. Between serving trays, mixing bowls, mugs, vases, and serving bowls, you will find an item that will brighten up any meal and look good when its in the cupboard or on the table. The glaze colors enhance the playful forms, and the balance of shiny and matte surfaces are great for food prep and serving.

If pottery isn’t a good fit this year, stop by the Gallery (sooner rather than later!) and take a look at the amazing jewelry, wood, and glass items. You might even find some quirky, metal sculptures! Either way, handmade is always the way to go for Mother’s Day presents.

Creation Osmose for Spring

March 16, 2017 By Morgan

As I start planning on what I want to wear to the Hutchinson Center for the Arts Gala coming up on April 22nd, I’m checking out the new jewelry that just came in to the Gallery from Creation Osmose of Quebec City, Canada.

Being that it’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream theme party, what to wear to coordinate?

I’m thinking that one of her newest designs in pewter with geometrics, rough turquoise and an alluring v-shape would match my dress perfectly! And of course earrings to match.

Even if you are not planning for a gala right now, there are other pieces that can be worn to dress up or down a black sheath dress or jeans. I’m thinking Mother’s Day brunch or garden parties…. Creation Osmose jewelry is a perfect way to spice up your spring wardrobe.
