Tony Clennell – Shino Pottery from the Great White North

February 8, 2017 By Morgan

When many think of Canada, usually hockey, maple syrup, and Bryan Adams come to mind, each bringing joy to thousands of people for years now. Included in this broad spectrum of gifts to the globe is pottery from Tony Clennell. He’s been diversifying Canadian exports for many decades.

He was introduced to pottery and threw his first piece in his aunt and uncle’s studio, Pinecroft, in Aylmer, Canada. That was in 1957…… at the age of 6. Tony has built quite a following in the many years since and is well known in the pottery community. His signature forms and attention to detail, combined with his use of gas and wood fired kilns, shino glazes, wood ash accents, and over glazing techniques make for some very handsome pottery indeed.
