Meet Chris Singewald

February 15, 2017 By Morgan

Chris Singewald joined the Clay Coyote Team at the beginning of February. Chris will be working in the Gallery on some Thursdays and Fridays. Take a moment to meet Chris and next time you’re in make sure to say ‘hi’ and/or bring him red velvet cake.

Chris Singewald headshotI was born in Waverly, Iowa, and received my Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Ceramics from the University of Northern Iowa in 2006. Since graduating, I was an apprentice for Internationally renowned ceramic artist Chris Gustin in South Dartmouth, MA.  In 2010, I received a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. From 2011 – 2013, I was a Resident Artist and Materials/Glaze Technician at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN, as well the Outreach and Studio Technician. Finally, I had the honor of being Outreach Manager at Northern Clay Center from April 2013 – January 2017; during this time, the Outreach program reached 10,000-14,000 people each year. I have extensive experience leading clay workshops with children and adults; I am passionate about bringing positive clay experiences to elementary students.

What’s your favorite pottery technique?

I create my wares with a potter’s wheel and continue to change the pieces after I get them off of the wheel. For the last year, I have been working on a standing treadle wheel, and I have to slow down and be more intentional with how I form pieces on the wheel.

Who are your pottery idols?

Pete Scherzer, S. C. Rolf, WIllem Gebben, Dan Finnegan, Bandana Pottery, Suze Lindsay, Kent McLaughlin, Robert Briscoe, Randy Johnston, Jan McKeachie Johnston, Doug Casebeer, and so many more. As I spent one year as an apprentice and two additional years wood firing with Gustin and his crew, I am always interested in seeing where Chris Gustin’s latest batch of work is going.

When you’re not making pots and working in the Gallery, how do you like to spend your time?

I am the Studio Manager for the Ceramics classes at Artistry in Bloomington, MN! I also like to play cribbage with my wife at Dangerous Man Brewing Company in Minneapolis, MN, sometimes I catch live music all around the Twin Cities, and hang out with friends is always important.

Do you have a pet?

Yes! An orange cat named Meatball! He is the best!

Where’s your favorite vacation destination?

I am hoping to explore some of Minnesota’s wonderful National Parks this Summer and camp with my wife.

What book are you reading right now?

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies by Jared Diamond

What’s your dessert of choice?

Too many to count…I have a terrible sweet tooth. I will go out of my way for red velvet cake or a good canolli.
