National Arts in Education Week

September 7, 2017 By Kylie Lawson

Did you know that every second Sunday in September kicks off National Arts in Education Week? This year National Arts in Education Week starts on September 10th and goes until the 16th.

National Arts in Education Week was created by Congress in 2010, and during this week, arts education and its supporters come together all across the United States to speak out about arts education and how impactful and important it is to have in our schools.

There are many ways you can get involved. Recently, the Administration has proposed drastic budget cuts to the arts programs in schools. This will hurt our children and students everywhere. There is a petition you can sign that will be sent to the U.S Secretary Education, Betsy DeVos, that will be used to encourage her to take action against these budget cuts.

You can write a letter to local administrators to explain to them why arts education in schools is so important, and the impact it has on children’s lives that will not only be helpful in the present but in the future as well. Encourage them to support the arts just as much as you do.

Another simple way to be involved is to take part in the social media campaign. During the week, use the hashtags #BecauseOfArtsEd and #ArtsEdWeek. Share your story on how art education has impacted your life or your child’s life. Post on Facebook and Twitter, and be sure to include your favorite photos of art or arts education moments!

The arts affect every single person in this world, so do your part in advocating to save them for present and future generations.
