Caring for Pottery

Clay Coyote Pottery is all high-fire stoneware. This means it is fired to about 2387 degF (Cone1 10). The glazes on the surface melt to form glass and actually become part of the surface layer of the clay. The clay itself is waterproof, even without glaze and will absorb essentially no water.

FIRST USE - We recommend a quick handwashing or running through the dishwasher, before using. Also check the bottom rim to be sure there aren't any sharp spots. (We try to check every pot, but occasionally one slips through). If there is a rough spot, either rub it with a knife sharpening stone, or take the bare clay bottom of another stoneware pot (a mug is good) and rub the two together.

UTENSILS - Because of the glaze surface. You can use any kind of utensil with your pots& metal, wood, glass& even plastic. (But that wouldn't be nice).

CLEANUP - Cleanup is just like anything else you use regularly in the kitchen. Most pieces can just be put in the dishwasher. For hand washing, wash just like any pot or pan. Stubborn stuck on stuff is best soaked for a bit (I'm the lazy cleanup type) or can be scrubbed off with any kitchen scrubber.

THE ONE BIG NO-NO is that stoneware pottery CANNOT be used on direct flame like a stovetop (gas or electric).  It WILL crack if you do.  Why?  Clay is silica (glass) based.  Glass expands when it is heated.  If you heat only part of a pot, and the rest is cool, the hot part tries to expand and the cool part says nothing doing.  As usual, the guy in the middle gets cracked.

Other than that, there' s no special care. Our work is intended and designed for every day use.
